The Watchtower

The other day Jack was over and found a copy of "The Watchtower" on the floor in my room.

She was also very curious about the post-it that said "Get @$$ in Portland" which really said "Get 45s (as in 45" records) in Portland".

But back to "The Watchtower". I have lived south of campus for most of my college career and often take the ramp or stairs by the Maeser Building up to campus, and so quite frequently I see the Jehovah's Witnesses. I don't know how long they have been coming to that particular location at BYU, but just about any recent BYU student that walks that way up to campus has seen the two men who stand on the corner and try to hand out copies of "The Watchtower" to us as we walk up to campus.

I think it is interesting that I have never seen them talk to any of the students. I guess most of the students walking up are in a hurry and walk by quickly, but I find it interesting that these missionaries don't try to engage with the students at all--they just want us to take magazines. I guess it just seems odd because it is so different from our missionaries.

When I was a kid some Jehovah's Witnesses would occasionally come to our door and my mom was always really friendly to them, she would let them share there message and take their magazine. I also remember being upset that she was so open to them, at the time I didn't know anything about the Jehovah's witnesses but I was pretty sure that I didn't want to be one--I liked our church. I asked my mom about it once and I remember her telling me that she like our church too, and that she just wanted to treat these missionaries with the same respect and love she wanted other to show to our missionaries even if she didn't agree with some of their beliefs.

And that's what I thought about when a missionary handed me a copy.

Kirs, I love those men. I like that they're dressed in their nice suits and they stand there early in the morning handing out pamphlets they must know most people don't read. I love seeing them there and I always take the pamphlet. And edit it.
