Be a Nose

About a week ago I ordered a bunch of books from McSweeney's, and I love them all so far! Yesterday I was flipping through Art Spiegleman's sketchbooks called "Be a Nose" and discovered the source of the name. Spiegleman references an old horror movie about beatniks in which one scene the main character is trying to sculpt some clay and just sits there yelling at it "Be a nose! Be a nose!" Spiegleman says that this is the best description of his creative process. And I really want to watch the movie--it looks funny. But what I'm getting at is how much I like and relate to this explanation. I've had to make some important decisions lately and I'm still stressed because I don't know what I want to do after I graduate, and I am basically yelling at me self to "Be a something!" But I know most of my fears are irrational and we shouldn't force ourselves to to be a nose or any other appendage.

On another note I went to Las Vegas last weekend for the first time, and I will share just one picture from the weekend:

Gross right? We were just walking out in the sun, and there it was on the sidewalk. But it reminded me of this:

good thing I don't have a relationship to end. I am working on some crafty goodies, so hopefully I will have more to share soon.

Doppelgangler

Everyone has been putting up their doppelgangers on le Facebook and it got me thinking about who mine would be. And while I have a story and photos to go with some of my real doppelgangers, until I get the pictures off my roommate's camera I will leave you with Amy Winehouse:

To Lumberjacqueline, Love Kirs

And for anyone who loves poutine.

Photo graph y

Yesterday I read an article for my film class that talked about photography meaning "writing in light". It makes sense if you think about it, but obviously I do not--especially since I'm pretty sure I've heard that before. This was definitely one of my favorite moments of the Christmas break. Alyssa and I missed the exit to Sauvies island because of the rain and decided to keep going and hang out under the St. John's bridge. It was beautiful, and we took some pictures while we ventured down to the dock. Then, while we were standing out on the water it started to snow.

It was beautiful, and so peaceful despite the cold and the waves rushing towards us on the dock. The snow was swirling all around us in the wind, and I'm pretty sure it was one of those there and gone moments that are nearly impossible to capture in words--or light.

New Year's Obsessions

Is it strange that I'm completely obsessed with these colors?
I love the blue, gold, orange, and black. But I'm also in love with the combination of textures. I could wear this shirt, belt, and jacket together forever. I just might.

Another obsession I need to share is this album:
This benefit CD for HIV research features some new songs from some of my favorite artists. My favorite songs would have to be "Train Song" by Feist & Ben Gibbard, "I was young when I left home" by Antony and Bryce Dessner, "Brackett, WI" by Bon Iver, "Stolen Houses" by Iron & Wine, and "Blood pt 2" by DJ Buck 65 and Sufjan Stevens. I know that's a lot of favorites, but I really love this album. Take a listen.

S-E-W Good.

I am reluctant to put these pictures up, but I know a couple of people have asked to see the swimsuit I made, so here it is:

These are all in black and white, but you can see the pretty green color in this post.

One Saturday in the sewing lab I had to "model" my swimsuit in front of everyone while it was half finished--and I'm pretty sure that day we just happened to have the most boys I've ever seen in the sewing lab.

On the bottom is a (small, sorry) picture of the swimsuit that inspired this one. It's from Lenny's Rio Fashion Week collection.

I didn't get the grade I wanted, but I know I am excited to wear it so who cares? What do you think?
